Universal's smash spy spoof Johnny English has
hoisted its international running total to $90.5m after 25 days on release,
adding $8.2m from 3,000 theatres in 37 countries over the weekend, according to
estimates.
The comedy placed second in the international market
behind Fox's X2: X-Men United and managed several decent holds despite
the global mutant onslaught.
Highlights included a second place finish in the UK
behind opener X2, dropping 44% and adding $2m from 456 theatres for a
mighty $24.8m total after 24 days.
The UK cumulative gross is already equal to the final
box office for star Rowan Atkinson's 1997 hit, Bean. That film went on to
gross some $240m worldwide, more than $190m of which came from theatres outside
the US.
Johnny English also finished second behind X2
in Germany, adding $1.9m from 775 sites and slipping 31% for a 25-day gross of
$17.2m.
Spain yielded $440,000 from 271 sites, which represented a 35% drop for a fourth place finish and $5.7m after 25 days.
In Australia all films took a big hit from X2,
with Johnny dropping 66% for a $392,000 gross from 211 theatres. Its
cumulative total after 25 days is $6.6m.
In its third week in Mexico, the comedy added $215,000 from 141 theatres, dropping 42% for a seventh place finish and a $1.7m running total. The cumulative gross to date is 150% bigger than the final gross for Bean.
Openings are still to come in 11 countries, including Argentina on May 8.
